Abstract

The place of political participation in the democratization process in Africa necessitates understanding the motivation for participation as an integral component for democracy. For Nigeria and Africa, this is crucial for the emergence of good governance and the development of democratic processes and governance. This chapter explored political participation in Nigeria and the issues of political apathy as a challenge of the democratization process. Using a desktop review technique, the chapter explored the causes of political apathy and its possible effect on Nigeria's democratization process as a template for Africa. While the factors and impacts identified in this chapter for political apathy in Nigeria are not exhaustive, the implication for the democratization process is significant. Therefore, there is a need for all stakeholders, governments, and citizens alike to embrace proactive measures in curtailing political apathy in Nigeria and, by inference, Africa's democratization process.
