Abstract

In today's era, solid waste management has become a global issue for advancing a sustainable society. Urbanization, industrial expansion, and fast adoption of fashion-oriented lifestyle choices have all contributed to the substantial increase in waste generation and, consequently, the rise in various types of problems associated with municipal solid waste management (MSWM) in India. This chapter highlights the present scenario of municipal solid waste management, addressing the associated challenges and best practices adopted by municipalities and urban local bodies for effective waste management in the Indian context. The unawareness and attitude of citizens toward waste disposal, the unorganized nature of the informal waste sector, financial constraints, and ineffective implementation of laws and policies are the major challenges most states and cities face. It also emphasizes the urgent need for strategic implementation of integrated solid waste management regulation and replicating existing models for best practices with effective transfer of knowledge and technology
