Abstract
In a rapidly evolving healthcare landscape, the prospects for big data analytics to enhance patient outcomes, disease management, and healthcare performance are immense. However, this transformation doesn't come without a big caveat: privacy of patients and security of data. This chapter depicts a qualitative study by comprehensive literature review, expert interviews, surveys, document analyses, and case studies. During this time whereby big data analytics is front and centre, there is a need for a deeper understanding of the risks and perhaps benefits one may experience while trying to protect patient data. The research contributes a conceptual framework outlining key factors and strategies in patient data security and privacy, offering actionable recommendations for healthcare organizations, policymakers, and data custodians. It underscores the necessity of proactive measures to mitigate risks, enhance data security, and preserve patient trust in the burgeoning field of big data healthcare applications.
