Abstract
In second or foreign language (L2) learning contexts, language learning strategies (LLS) serve as one of the key individual learner differences, with their facilitating and self-regulatory role for L2 learners. LLS have, therefore, been preserving their place in L2 research and instruction for half a century. However, despite their well-acknowledged role in L2 learning, some debates and controversies also accompany the interest in LLS. To provide a profound understanding of LLS in L2 learning, the current chapter initially provides a synthesis of prior conceptualizations. Upon defining the concept, the chapter then summarizes the major characteristics and taxonomies of LLS. These are followed by the links between LLS and self-regulation. The chapter then refers to different domains of L2 learning and elucidates the use of LLS in these areas. Finally, the chapter displays how strategy training can help language learners and concludes by outlining some avenues for further research.
