Abstract

The aging population in Saudi Arabia presents significant challenges for healthcare providers, with older adults facing multiple chronic conditions and polypharmacy. Age-related changes impact drug metabolism, emphasizing the need for comprehensive medication management and pharmacist involvement in deprescribing. The chapter addresses common geriatric diseases like hypertension, diabetes, heart failure, and dyslipidemia, offering tailored strategies for treatment. Individualized approaches are vital due to variations in health status and comorbidities among elderly patients. Hypertension significantly contributes to cardiovascular events, requiring personalized treatment decisions. Thrombotic and bleeding risks rise with age, necessitating a multidisciplinary approach to cardiovascular disease management, with direct oral anticoagulants showing promise. Integration of palliative care into healthcare systems ensures quality end-of-life care, with efforts to minimize unnecessary medications and reduce adverse drug events.
