Abstract

The application of gaseous hydrogen in combustion internal (CI) diesel dual-fuel (DDF) engine is not new, and it does not yet have broad commercial applications that ensure the increase in performance and consequent reduction in costs to which it is normally associated. The effect of hydrogen on diesel internal combustion engines can be analyzed through the different parameters that an CI engine has grouped into four main aspects: performance, combustion characteristics, polluting emissions, and future challenges. The effect of hydrogen application is consequently a multivariate analysis that this study addresses individually on each parameter, explaining its probable causes and a necessary theoretical framework for it. The effect on each parameter is finally quantified in the best approximate framework for application in the petroleum industry, which is defined with a hydrogen contribution of between 10-20% and load conditions of at least 50%. The importance of this study lies in the empirical analysis and verification of the supply of hydrogen to DDF engines.
