Abstract

There is a need for transformative leaders who can usher in the changes that will help students and the academy realize their full potential. The existing literature on transformative leaders provides substantial evidence of the leadership of Black women in various enterprises. Much of the literature on leadership approaches leadership as a destination, but it fails to prepare Black women for the journey. The Black woman's journey is unique; the resources, strategies, and practices she uses as she exercises transformative leadership are different from those of others. This chapter identifies ways Black women aspiring to leadership within higher education may integrate transformative leadership qualities in their work to meet (or even exceed) professional expectations while mitigating factors that could damage them personally.
