Abstract
This chapter is about one of the future research directions to come from this study. This pertains to porting of the BACIS program from a stand-alone decision support system to one that is integrated into OpenMRS, a fully-fledged electronic medical records system. The study relates to the broader topic of scalability of e-health systems. Although the national government in the Republic of South Africa has not formally adopted an electronic health record system as yet in its health facilities, the OpenMRS project offers many insights on what can possibly be achieved with an electronic health record system in a developing country context. Therefore, the decision was taken to experiment with porting of the BACIS program onto the OpenMRS platform.
