Abstract
This chapter introduces the concept of intelligent learning management systems (ILMS), which combines traditional learning management systems (LMS) with predictive modeling and interactive capabilities provided by artificial intelligence (AI). First, an overview is given of current LMS and the different functions they cover in the context of higher education. Second, several standard AI paradigms are discussed for solving different automated tasks. Both concepts are then combined into intelligent learning management systems, which extend standard LMS with AI-based capabilities for prediction, modeling, and interactive tasks that are useful in online educational settings. Several use cases of ILMS in the context of mathematics education (ME) are included, in particular examples of learning analytics (LA) and intelligent tutoring systems (ITS). The chapter concludes with a discussion on the future possibilities of AI in ILMS.
