Abstract
Insulation degradation of cables is the core factor of its shortened life, and the current operation and inspection departments are unable to effectively analyse cable insulation defects from multiple perspectives. To address this problem, ANSYS simulation was used to extract the characterization of cable insulation faults. Firstly, the fundamentals of defective insulation in cables were introduced. Then, a finite element model of a 10kV Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE) cable was established by using ANSYS simulation software. Finally, simulations and analyses of bubbles, bulges, and cable insulation exhibiting water-tree defects were carried out to derive changes in the cable’s magnetic field strength due to different defects. The results indicate that as the degree of cable insulation defects continues to increase, the cable’s magnetic field strength also undergoes distortion.
