Abstract
This paper examines the 50 cycles of the oxidation characteristics of WC-10Co-4Cr feedstock powder coatings applied by HVOF on AISI316L at three different temperatures: 750 °C, 850 °C, and 950 °C. The oxidation kinetics were established, and the results for the bare and coated specimens were compared using the weight change measurements of the coated samples. The surface morphology of the coated austenite steel samples was examined using x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy, and EDS after the oxidation cycle. Severe peeling-off, sputtering, and spalling from the oxide scale were seen in the AISI 316 L steel that was not coated. In addition, the scale was rich in Fe2O3, which contributed to the significant weight gain. The protective WO3 and Cr2O3 phases formed on the oxide scale were revealed to have more excellent oxidation resistance.
