The relative thermooxidative stability of a phthalindde against a phenylethynylphthalimide terminated polyimide

Abstract

An aromatic imide polymer was prepared both as a phenylethynyl terminated oligomer (LARCTM"PETI-5) and as the corresponding linear polymer with phthalic anhydride endcaps (LARCm-8515). After heating to cure/moulding temperatures, isothermal weight losses were measured for 134 h at four temperatures. Arrhenius activation energies were 169 + 6 kJ and 175 + 33 kJ for 8515 and PETI-5, respectively. Extrapolated lifetimes at lower temperatures were similar for the two materials.
