Junior high school students preparedness toward earthquake in urban and rural areas in Pesisir Selatan

Abstract

Abstract The earthquake on September 30th, 2009, damaged 35 schools in Pesisir Selatan, so student preparedness really needs to be improved to reduce fatalities and the impact of earthquake. This study aims to determine preparedness differences of junior high school students in urban and rural areas against earthquake in Pesisir. This study is quantitative with a cross-sectional design. The research was conducted in junior high school located in urban and rural areas in Pesisir Selatan in July-August 2021 with 84 students selected using the proportional systematic random sampling technique. Data collection was done through interview with questionnaire. The parameter employed was LIPI’s which consists of multiple facets such as knowledge, emergency response, early warning, and resource mobilization. Data were then analyzed using the Mann-Whitney test with α= 0.05 and CI = 95%. The results showed there were differences preparedness of junior high school students in urban and rural areas with p-value = 0.000. Therefore, the Government through the Health Office and Education Office, and regional disaster management agency can cooperate regularly and periodically regarding the provision of simulations/training and monitoring regarding disasters to students.
