Abstract
The evolution of an isolatedN-body system withN= 100 has been studied numerically for about 30 mean relaxation times. The equipartition effect leads to pronounced mass segregation with the formation of a dense nucleus of heavy members and an extended halo of mainly light bodies. The total integration time would correspond to ∼ 108years for a mean cluster radius of 1 pc and a mean mass of 1⊙, but even so only 10 per cent of the cluster members escape to infinity.
