Abstract

ABSTRACT Developing irrigation infrastructure is crucial for boosting agricultural productivity and securing local livelihoods, especially in regions with challenging terrains and limited water resources. Lift irrigation systems (LISs) are increasingly recognized in national policies for addressing water scarcity issues. However, ensuring their sustainability is a major concern, leading to a focused examination of contributing factors and reinforcement strategies. This study, focusing on 15 LISs in Nepal, employs a mixed-method approach combining desk research, field studies, questionnaire surveys, and key informant interviews. A comprehensive indicator-based framework, including five components and 15 indicators, is designed, with the lift irrigation sustainability index (LISI) quantifying sustainability status. Findings show varying degrees of sustainability, with a significant proportion falling into fully or partially sustainable categories. Failures are primarily attributed to structural issues. Operational status varies, with only half being fully operational. The study emphasizes integrating key indicators into future projects for improved resilience and sustainability, drawing lessons from unsuccessful ventures to enhance the design of future lift irrigation systems.
