Abstract

SUMMARY A variety of mast cell factors and other agents were injected into the uteri of pseudopregnant and progesterone-treated, ovariectomized mice. Oils, compound 48/80 (a histamine releaser) and one of three samples of bradykinin were the only stimuli that induced massive deciduomata in a high proportion of mice. The mast-cell factors, histamine, heparin and 5-hydroxytryptamine; carrageenin, several capillary permeability factors; oestradiol, polymyxin B, inflammatory extracts prepared from the subcutaneous tissue of mice, rats and rabbits, mouse uterine extracts, glass beads or electrical stimulation were of very low activity or were inactive. Air and dimethylsulphoxide induced large deciduomata in some mice. Intraperitoneal pyrathiazine was of low activity. Prior depletion of tissue histamine did not prevent the induction of deciduomata by local compound 48/80. It is concluded that the induction of deciduomata in mice is not dependent on histamine or other mast-cell factors or on capillary permeability or inflammatory factors.
