Abstract

In this study the effect of ginger plant (Zingiber officinale) was examined. The plant extracts were prepared by weighing the plant root (20 g) into 100 mls of water and ethanol (at gram per liter) and grounded to determine the extract concentration. The results obtained showed that ginger extract of the root gave the highest antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureusand Streptococcus pyogenes while the two antibiotics used (ampicillin and tetracycline) were also active but at less extent compared to ginger extract. The concentration of the plant extract had significant effect on the zone of inhibition on both organisms; also, the concentration of the two antibiotics had significant effect on the zone of inhibition for both organisms. This result showed that ethanol and water extracts ofginger root can be used alongside conventional antibiotics to fight bacterial infections
