Magnetic and Optical Studies of Copper Caprylate in Dioxane-Ethanol Mixtures

Abstract

The IR spectrum of copper caprylate exhibits only one absorption band at about 1580 cm-1 which has been assigned to the binuclear configuration of copper soaps. The magnetic and spectroscopic studies confirm that the binuclear structure of copper caprylate persists in solutions. The absorption band near 375 mµ reveals the presence of coppercopper linkage and thus establishes the binuclear configuration of copper soaps in mixed solvents. The behaviour of copper soap and copper salt solutions is quite different and the absorption maxima are observed at different wavelengths.
