Abstract

The Mössbauer-spectra of the 14.4 kev γ-ray of Fe37 in Ironcarbonyls were investigated. The data reveal the existence of electric field gradients at the Fe57 nuclei, produced by the electrons in the molecular orbitals of the compounds. Various aspects of the molecular structure and -bond could be deduced from the magnitude of the observed quadrupole splitting. The Mössbauer-spectra indicate a preferred orientation of the molecules in solid Fe(CO)5. The sign of quadrupole moment of the 14.4 kev level of Fe57 is found to be positive from these data.
