This paper reviews AOM burden, risk factors and consequences in a 2-staged approach, based on risk factors formulas and regression modeling. They calculated AOM incidence rate is 10.85%, i.e. 709 million cases each year, with 51% of these occurring in under-fives.

Using the 2010-2011 National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey and National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey, the authors calculated that 47 out of 1000 suppurative otitis media visits resulted in antibiotic prescription. Most of them were unnecessary.
