2. When James Martineau was compiling his Hymns for the Christian Church and Home (1840) he had invited Ogden — who had received part of his education from Rev. Joseph Hutton, father of Richard and John, and who had become a Unitarian — to supply tunes of unusual metre. The result was Holy Songs and Musical Prayers (1842) which incurred considerable criticism as it included adaptations as hymn tunes of pieces by Beethoven and other composers.
