Nitric Oxide J 2000, 4:112–122. Increased nitrogen monoxide (NO) concentrations change leukocyte function under many experimental conditions. NO inhalation does not change the expression of cell adhesion molecules CD11a, CD11b, CD11c, and L-selectin on neutrophilic granulocytes or monocytes. However, the generation of reactive oxygen species in response to activation with phorbol myristate acetate increased in polymorphonuclear neutrophils after NO inhalation. Finally, baseline and lipopolysaccharide-stimulated production of IL-1b decreased after NO inhalation, whereas the lipopolysaccharide-stimulation production of TNF-a increased.
