Abstract

IN BRIEF Current diabetes practice guidelines emphasize the need to augment conventional diabetes therapy with other evidence-based treatments that support improved diabetes outcomes. Clinical depression, much like obesity, is a significant independent risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes and for progression and mortality from type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Effective treatments for depression are available, may enhance glycemic control and insulin sensitivity, and thereby may preserve the physical health and independence of people living with diabetes.
